College football: Miami rallies to stay unbeaten

Dallas Crawford scored on a three-yard run with 16 seconds left to give No. 10 Miami a 27-23 victory over North Carolina on Thursday night at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Crawford's short score ended a 90-yard drive by the Hurricanes (6-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) and capped his own big performance in the backfield after Miami lost top rusher Duke Johnson to an early injury. Crawford finished with 137 yards in 33 carries — surpassing his season totals in both categories — and two touchdowns to help the Hurricanes barely avoid a big upset.

The Hurricanes won despite Stephen Morris throwing four interceptions, as many as he had thrown all year, while the defense surrendered a season-high 500 yards against the Tar Heels' no-huddle scheme.

But Miami got the stop it needed at the end, with Bryn Renner's final heave into the end zone from the Miami 28 falling incomplete on the game's final play.

North Carolina (1-5, 0-3) was going for its first win against a top-10 opponent since beating then-No. 4 Miami on a last-second field goal in 2004.

The loss was the latest stinging setback for the Tar Heels, who entered the year with hopes of winning the ACC's Coastal Division but now find themselves off to their worst start since 2006. They led this one 23-13 early in the fourth only to see Crawford score twice in the final 11 1/2 minutes to erase the deficit.

Eric Ebron had eight catches for 199 yards — a single-game record for a North Carolina tight end — and Quinshad Davis also hauled in a touchdown pass from Renner.

Arkansas sticks with Allen

Brandon Allen earned the starting quarterback position at Arkansas with a stellar spring practice under first-year Coach Bret Bielema. Allen has largely struggled since then, including a four-for-12 passing effort for 30 yards in the Razorbacks' 52-7 loss to South Carolina last week.

Despite Allen's struggles — he ranks 13th in the Southeastern Conference in passer rating — Bielema is committed to the sophomore as the starter for Arkansas (3-4, 0-3 SEC). It's a job that doesn't get any easier this week when the Razorbacks, who have lost four in a row, travel to face No. 1 Alabama (6-0, 3-0).

Ole Miss end done for season

Mississippi defensive end C.J. Johnson will have season-ending surgery on his right ankle.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Johnson hasn't been fully healthy since he suffered a broken fibula in his right leg during spring practice in March. He played in the first four games this season, making 12 tackles, including four for a loss. He led the Rebels with 6.5 sacks in 2012.

But the ankle started hurting again during the Rebels' Sept. 28 loss to Alabama and the junior hasn't played since. Coach Hugh Freeze said Thursday that surgery has been scheduled for Oct. 28 and Johnson expects to qualify for a medical redshirt.
