Russell Westbrook returns, helps Thunder beat Suns

Russell Westbrook made an earlier-than-expected return from a knee injury and had 21 points and seven assists, Kevin Durant had 33 points and 10 rebounds, and the Oklahoma City Thunder rallied for a 103-96 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Sunday night at Oklahoma City.

Serge Ibaka added nine points and 10 rebounds for Oklahoma City (2-1), which won its fifth straight home opener and defeated Phoenix (2-1) for the 11th straight time. The Suns last beat Oklahoma City in December 2010.

Westbrook, sidelined for six months after first tearing the lateral meniscus in his right knee during the second game of the NBA playoffs, then having a medical setback, returned three to five weeks ahead of the team's previously announced timetable.

He said afterward that he felt a little rusty, but he seemed satisfied with his effort.

"I just missed some easy ones but that will come," Westbrook said. "I'm able to do what I want. I could be better but that's all right. That's expected. I'm not expected to come back and be bionic man. I'm just going to work my way through it."

Former Clippers guard Eric Bledsoe had 26 points and a career-best 14 assists for Phoenix.

Minnesota 109, at New York 100: Kevin Love had 34 points, 15 rebounds and five assists and Kevin Martin scored 30 points as the Timberwolves improved to 3-0 for the first time in 12 years. Minnesota took a huge lead after a 40-point first quarter, then pulled away after the Knicks trimmed it to two in the closing minutes to move halfway to matching the 2001-02 team that set the franchise record by winning its first six. The Timberwolves are averaging a whopping 37.3 points in the first quarter. Carmelo Anthony had 22 points and 17 rebounds for the Knicks, who have dropped two straight after a season-opening victory and drew loud boos in the first half while appearing to be standing still on defense.

at Miami 103, Washington 93: LeBron James scored 25 points, Chris Bosh had 24 and the Heat beat the winless Wizards to snap a rare two-game slide. Dwyane Wade scored 20 points for Miami, which hasn't dropped three straight regular-season games since Jan. 10-13, 2012.

at Orlando 107, Brooklyn 86: Nikola Vucevic had 19 points and 12 rebounds as the Magic routed the Nets in Jason Kidd's coaching debut. Kidd was suspended for Brooklyn's first two games after pleading guilty in a drunk driving case.

at Detroit 87, Boston 77: Josh Smith and Andre Drummond scored 15 points each for the Pistons. The Celtics are 0-3 under first-year Coach Brad Stevens.
