NYCC: 'Sleepy Hollow' panel promises monsters, teases karaoke

The Fox hit "Sleepy Hollow" added some fresh cast this season, including "House of Cards" veteran Sakina Jaffrey as the new police captain and Matt Barr as a sketchy bounty hunter. But that doesn't mean these characters have had the expected effect on the series' topsy-turvy world.

"Only in 'Sleepy Hollow' can you arrive to bring civility and order and be seen as a party pooper‎," Jaffrey, who replaced Orlando Jones' defrocked Captain Irving, laughed to a New York Comic Con audience Sunday afternoon. ‎"But I'm happy to be the local killjoy."

After last season's finale reveal of Henry Parish as the Horseman of War and — oh yes — as Ichabod and Katrina's son, the second season has continued the show's all-in mythology, with Tom Mison's Ichabod Crane and Nicole Beharie's Abbie Mills at the center of the action. At the Gotham fan fest, executive producers ‎Len Wiseman and Mark Goffman offered some thoughts on the upcoming season.

While they kept close to their vests details on Irving's future and a number of key relationships, Wiseman said the show this season will keep piling on the recognizable creatures, continuing to ask "what monsters can we bring to it that work with the personal stories of our characters.‎ We have a lot of creatures coming up that we've all heard of and seen, but we put a twist on it‎." Goffman said writers wanted to equal the effect of last season's finale with upcoming reveals, but also were aware of the dangers of the wrong kind of twist.

"We don't want to just have a surprise for surprise's sake," he said.

Producers also screened the first half of this Monday's episode, which finds Ichabod and Abbie on the trail of a girl who's gone missing by the apparent hand of the mythic Pied Piper. The crime is discovered via the appearance of an ancient, hypnotizing flute — which, surprise, Crane knows how to play.‎

The pair also join — reluctantly — Barr's bounty hunter Nick Hawley to track down the child-snatching villain.

The episode opens with a strong comic bit — Ichabod is behind the wheel of Abbie's car, burning ‎rubber in a local parking lot as Abbie registers shock that Ichabod knows how to drive. "Let us unleash our own horsemen," he quips as he floors the accelerator. Jones played the ham for much of the panel, saying he'd "like to get Moloch pregnant" — and, in another instance, referring to his character selling his soul to the horsemen. The self-appointed "Sleepyheads" turned out in force for the panel. Given the ‎show's overlapping themes with "Supernatural," some were calling for a bit of crossover. One fan — dubbing the group she belongs to as "Super-Sleepy Heads" — asked whether maybe Ichabod Crane might discover the CW series on television.

Wiseman replied, "We talk about that quite a bit," adding, that though he had no idea how it would happen legally, "all I know is somebody has to figure that out."

Crane will be engaging in a different kind of entertainment experience this season.

"We are going to do an episode where Ichabod discovers karaoke," Goffman said.
