AT THE PLATE: Yasiel Puig drove in the Dodgers' first run with a groundout to second base in the first inning. Puig, who batted third and started in right field, finished the game 0 for 2. Rookie Joc Pederson was one for two and is batting .750 through two exhibition games. Darwin Barney doubled and walked. Alex Guerrero was one for two with a run scored.
ON THE MOUND: Brandon League pitched a perfect third inning in relief of starter Clayton Kershaw. Manager Don Mattingly said League is working on throwing fastballs to the opposite side of the plate — that is, away from right-handed hitters and inside on left-handed hitters. "He's worked really hard," Mattingly said of League. Joe Wieland, who was acquired in the trade that sent Matt Kemp to the San Diego Padres, pitched two scoreless innings.
EXTRA BASES: Top prospect Corey Seager drew two walks and scored two runs. O'Koyea Dickson doubled in a run in the sixth inning. Kyle Jensen hit a two-run home run in the eighth and outfielder Scott Schebler doubled in two runs in the ninth. To Mattingly, this was evidence that the farm system has improved over his tenure as manager. "No question," Mattingly said. "It's really what we talked about, building that system. It takes time. You have to kind of let your guys develop. I think the trade deadline was a pretty good indication that we weren't willing to let any of our guys go. We're starting to get a chance to reap the rewards of getting guys closer to the big leagues."
